From pandemic preparedness to protecting plant health on exciting agenda – Day 3 highlights
The thematic sessions continued on Day 3 of the One Conference. From pandemic preparedness to protecting plant health, animal welfare to the microbiome: participants explored and debated an exciting range of topics. Don’t miss the closing plenary session on Day 4!
Participants were treated to a rich and exciting range of topics on Day 3 of the One Conference. The packed hall for the morning session of Many Ways demonstrated the huge interest in using new methodologies to replace animal testing. Pandemic preparedness headlined the morning One Life session, where speakers such as the World Bank’s Franck Berthe gave fascinating perspectives on the drivers for disease spread and how we can use a One Health approach to tackle them.

One Planet’s opening session explored threats to plant health, prompting us to think about new solutions. Pieter Beck from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre spoke of how remote sensors could help us better understand forest health, while Sarah Brunel from the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization argued that a people-centred approach to plant health is crucial. Over in the main hall, the discussion focused on how best to bridge the divide between research and policy, and how we can stimulate interagency collaboration.

The afternoon sessions ranged from an eye-opening look into the relationship between microbiomes, human and environmental health, to how we can improve animal welfare to meet sustainability targets. The One Life’s afternoon session focussed on tackling antimicrobial resistance in the food producing environment, while endocrine disruptors were on the agenda of a parallel Many Ways afternoon session. Meanwhile, open science headlined the One Society’s afternoon session, with causality used as a showcase for how we can make it common practice.
Tomorrow will see the closing plenary session of the One Conference. Be sure not to miss it by joining online if not in person.
